Revolutionizing the insurance experience

Overview

This Fall, I had the opportunity to join the exceptional Acquisition team at Intact. My incredible 3 months in Montreal were full of discovering unique home-away-from-homes, meeting new friends and eating smoked meat.

At Intact, I worked across with multiple diverse teams and brands to build intuitive experiences while maximizing growth :)

My Project

Insurance from a 2030 lens

The challenge

Reimagine the insurance experience from a 2030 perspective to create an industry-leading experience for new customers that also drives business growth.

Collaborating closely with three designers, I ignited an end-to-end reimagining of our acquisition flow. Leveraging speculative design, I delivered and presented my vision to senior stakeholders. My work established a foundation for Intact's future product strategy and direction.

My Contributions ✨

  • Joined forces with the user research team to run focus groups, sparking reflection, new experiments and a sturdy foundation for my vision.
  • Redesigned Intact's core user journey by utilizing insights from heatmaps and user interviews.
  • Led comprehensive research including usability studies, competitive analysis, and trend forecasting to guide my design decisions.
  • Explored and visualized future possibilities for AI and future technology through speculative design.
  • Successfully delivered and pitched my vision to senior stakeholders by balancing business requirements with human-centered design in a complex insurance environment.

What are my most important takeaways?

What are my most important takeaways?

Communication at a larger scale

Each decision I made, solution I proposed, or idea I presented had the potential to significantly impact drop rates if implemented. In the Insurance industry, where a 1% shift in completions equates to millions of dollars being gained or lost, it was paramount to fully explain the thinking behind my decisions when sharing with team members.

This includes a full background including business context, KPI’s, research, and dependencies. I learned to always assume your audience knows nothing about your project and give a strong rational behind every decision.

The art of constraints

Designing for Intact is all about balancing trade-offs. I learned the hard way that insurance likes to hit you with constraints from every angle, and solutions that work perfectly in other industries often fall flat.

While it became easy to limit myself when designing for such a delicate system, I discovered that overshooting was far better than holding back my ideas. Though this approach required many tough decisions and careful navigation, I found unexpected novelty in my solutions.

Innovation sprouts from the root, not the bud.

Innovative problem-solving is far from a quick fix. While working on my project, I noticed that to think beyond conventional solutions, I'd need to take a step back and analyze the underlying problem.

This approach made it easier to think critically about our product, it’s position in the marketplace, and how future technology could be leveraged to solve current pain points.

Buy-in gets you through the door

To transform my project’s vision into a reality and truly impact Intact’s roadmap, I needed to gain buy-in from our senior stakeholders. I learned that while it’s important to successfully execute your vision, it’s even more important to sell it with a compelling case.

To gain stakeholder buy-in, it’s crucial to provide enough context, articulate assumptions, and provide research-backed solutions. Additionally, I discovered the unique goals and requirements of different partners — learning to empathize with multiple diverse perspectives.
